Question:

65 Mustang Exhaust System?

I have an old 65 mustang that is waiting to be restored ( i am trying to keep it in repairable condition from now till when i get out of college which is 5 years). Any advice on rust management is welcome and any advice on refurbishing is welcome also. But, my question is. My exhaust system is rattling. I fixed the bracket that held the end of the muffler in place ( bolted to the bottom side of trunk) but, towards the middle second of the car, where the muffler has a wide, jug like section, it rattles. Is this a big deal? What can i do to fix it? Advice please!

Answer:

It is only a big deal if it bothers you. But I would get a smaller muffler to get rid of the problem. As for the rust, you can get rust converter at Auto Zone.
The wide, jug like section is the actual muffler: the pipe coming out of the back of it is the tailpipe. You may find the clamps, where the muffler is attached to the pipes at the front and the back, need replacing. It may also be collapsing internally and if this is the case the whole system will need to be replaced. Before you store the car, detail it really well. Invest in some decent car car products to remove all the old wax off it, then re-apply a polish, a protectant and then a good wax. Check out Meguiars or Mothers range of car care products, both have 3 or 4 step programs to guide you through this. The reason for doing it is to maximise the protection from the elements. Re-do it the moment the water stops 'beading' when you wash it or it gets rained on. That means the wax is breaking down and needs to be replaced. Hopefully you have somewhere to store the car that keeps it out of the weather, which is the best form of rust management. Otherwise you need to invest in a decent car cover to keep over it. I would suggest a hail cover, but make sure it has breather vents in it to help prevent condensation. Any car that is stored under a car cover needs to be aired at least once a week to ensure all the surface areas have a chance to dry out completely. I have an auto accessories business and advise people on this all the time, so the information I have given you has come from my suppliers. Both of the car care suppliers would have websites if you wanted to check them out. I envy you your Mustang. Over here they are expensive toys and one of my dream cars. Don't let it go!
ahh get some thrush turbo mufflers sound good but quiet $40 a piece then get some exhaust tubing pre bent at a shop maybe $30. Now if you have a garage install a kit it all really depends on what they feel like charging.
