I have a 96 Yukon that has 205,000 miles on it, although the engine only has 15,000. As I knew would happen sooner or later, the transmission is now slipping and wont go into third gear. Aside from a new transmission/overhaul. is there anything else that it could be? or am i looking at a new car.
If the engine was replaced just 15K ago, have the trans rebuilt.Should cost 1500-1800 bucks parts and labor depending on the region you live in. Any replacement vehicle you spent that little on is likely to be a worn out POS and not a 96 with a fresh powertrain.
Looking at a new car?? Just rebuild/replace the transmission! It will be cheaper than another vehicle. Other than a low fluid level, symptoms would be caused by worn internals. Simple as that.
If the truck is in good shape in other items and body wise, recommend rebuilding it; I recall a lot of 96 models using the 4L60E transmissions had a common problem with sun shells breaking and the wiring connector to transmission switch on left side had a problem of connectors getting glued stuck to the switch
