Question:

A fear of fire and violence?

Lately, all I‘ve been hearing is how Iran or North Korea or some place wants to have war over here, and they‘ve been setting off practice bombs, etc. Stuff like that [sorry I don‘t know exactly what they‘re talking about, but it scares me]. And it seriously scares the **** out of me just to hear people talk about it! Fire is my ultimate, biggest fear and if I just think about a bomb being set off, I can‘t sleep, my heart pounds, it really scares meIs there any way of overcoming this? I know it‘s natural to be scared of violence with bombs and stuff, but I don‘t want to be paranoid about it. 10pts to best answer

Answer:

I grew up in the 80s constantly in fear of nuclear war, I understand what you're going through, everytime a car's headlights flashed outside my window I would jump thinking of the heat flash from a nuclear attack. Just hope that they know in the back of their mind, that such an attack would result in their being wiped off the map and that will deter them from being so stupid as to try and pull such a stunt. And definitely talk with someone, lay out all your fears, a professional may be able to help you overcome your irrational fears and assist you in finding ways of dealing with the rational ones. The two you mention here are rational, but talking about al your fears is important, that's what I mean.
huh. i think this is one of the (FEW) instances where talking to someone might help. it could be someone you know, or a hired professional, i dunno. otherwise, try yoga or something, and tell yourself this--you are SAFE! even if something happens, in this moment, right now, you're safe. you're happy and safe. okay? i hope this works and you feel better and more comfortable. :) good luck.
There's rational fear and irrational fear. But when either is affecting basic things like your ability to sleep, it may be time to see your doctor or a mental health professional. Your doctor may prescribe sleeping pills to help you with that problem immediately. But for the deeper issues, it helps to talk about it with a professional counselor. Good luck.
