How serious the fire is. 1 alarm is not as serious as 5 alarm. To be more specific, I believe that it indicates how many stations have responded to the fire. The first alarm goes to the local station, the sceond to the next closest, and so on. If 5 companies are involved, it is obviously a huge and difficult blaze.
