Both quartz and granite are natural stones with similar properties. Quartz seems to be growing in popularity lately because it's reported to have a better resistance to staining and isn't quite as porous as granite. Also, quartz is considered to be germ free since it's not porous. That's a bit misleadiing since the germs could be on the surface just as easily as any other countertop but it's supposed to be easier to keep clean. Typically, granite is a solid slab cut from one stone while quartz can be either a solid slab or a composite of @ 95% stone and some polymer binder.
