A question for those who crochet or knit clothing?

How do you secure buttons (with regular sewing thread) to an article of knitted or crocheted clothing? How do you secure thread to yarn? Is there another way to do it?

Answer:

Cold water for anything you don't want to shrinkYou can even just tumble them dry on low and hang them to finish dryingCold water does not cost moreIn fact it's cheaper because you aren't using the energy (whether it be electric or gas) to warm the water up.
Cool to cold water wash, rinseCool dryer or air dry: Regarding material (especially cotton and cotton blends), heat will shrinkCool to cold water wash and rinse will avoid to lessen shrinkage and also helps to maintain the jean's dye color from fading.
Wash them in cold water hot water cause a lot of fabrics to shrink and bleed.
Wash them in cold water, hang to dry then iron using a light spray like Magic SizingOpen up the waist band, spray and iron pulling lightly on the band as you ironThis will loosen it upPull the jeans over the end of the ironing board, spray and iron and this will loosen the thigh partIron the legs as usualThey will feel a tiny bit snug for a few minutes but will loosen upIf you buy jeans with some stretch like Lee Jeans, this also helps.
The correct thread to sew on buttons to knitting or crochet is with the same yarn that is is made fromIf the yarn is very thick you can split the strands lengthways and use part of itApparently you will lose points when you show your work if you use sewing thread to sew on buttonsI just stitch the button on the same way that you would sew buttons on fabric but leave a long thread at the beginningWhen I have finished I simply sew the ends into the back of the article so that they cannot be seenI rarely lose buttons with this method.
