Question:

advantages and disadvantages of aftermarket air intakes?

what would you say are the advantages and disadvantages of cold air intakes and/or short ram intakes?

Answer:

Aftermarket Air Intakes Give the engine bay a more dynamic look or as dress up item Induction sound [BSD] Intake modifications are to get more air into the engine. The engine management system picks the air/fuel ratio. The basics of the engine management system (at WOT) is: Determine how much air is going into the engine at this instant (often by a Mass Airflow Sensor or speed/density system) Determine what the best amount of fuel is for this amount of air Inject only that amout of fuel into the intake air stream/cylinder Determine what the best time to ignite the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder is (relative to piston position) Ignite it In some cases, monitor oxygen sensors to determine if we picked the right amount of fuel, then modify output as necessary Short Ram Air Intake It replaces the OEM air intake with a short metal pipe and air filter inside the engine bay. This can slightly boost performance levels in a vehicle by increasing air volume intake, at the expense of increased intake noise. The high temperature of air near the engine can reduce performance in some cases, but this is often made up for by the increased volume of air. As a remedy, many short ram intakes include some form of heat shield. However, some users prefer to use different types of air intakes such as a cold air intake. Users with forced induction engines often opt for short ram intakes because compressors adjacent to the engine, especially turbochargers, heat up and negate much of the benefits of a cold air intake. The last thing about increased/forced air in car's engine is higher MPG. Average compact sport cars with 1.8-2.2L motors can gain 1 to 3 miles per gallon while using an intake, and a lot more while using turbo. This is because it uses air to increase detonation.
Short Ram Intake Benefits
supposively, the air has less restriction which equals better flow. all of that equals either/or more power and better economy. basically, can you breathe easire from a nearly straight pipe or a large plastic contraption with multiple bends, debri trap, etc? downside is noise, unless that is what you like, and the filter tends to get dirty more often. coupled with changes to your exhaust, people see 5+ hp gains and 1-2 mpg increases.
