Question:

advantages for copper column in distillery with theoretical explanation?

In distillery column moc we prefer ss 304,ss316, copper, dow copper.I want know difference between copper and dow copper.how we select the moc in distillery.

Answer:

The copper react with sulfur compounds in the alcohol vapor. The metal of choice depends on the intended purpose of the alcohol. If it's for fuel, the stainless will be your best choice for long term durability and corrosion resistance. If the alcohol is for beverage purposes, you must have copper in your vapor column or the final result will be unpalatable due to the non-removal of the sufur compounds. Also, this reactions does consume the copper in the column, though only slightly. This does serve to limit the lifetime of the column to some finite length of time. Another option used by distilleries is to put copper in the vapor path (particularly in the condenser) in their stainless column to accomplish this function. Surface area and being placed at the location of phase change (vapor to liquid) are key factors to its effectiveness. As for the difference of copper vs. dow copper...The dow copper is likely just a brand name of a certain application from the Dow Corning corporation.
