Question:

Advice for a hopeful ceramic artist?

I just want to make ceramics so badly. I‘ve looked for wheels for sale but haven‘t got one yet. I‘ve been sculpting some by hand but have no way to fire them and what I really want to be doing is throwing on the wheel! I am in a predicament because I don‘t have any necessary equipment to do this but I don‘t want to give up on this dream! What should I do? When I go to college I hope to have an art major with a concentration in ceramics but how can I do this without lots of practice? I‘ve only done it a few times and I NEED more opportunities if it is going to be such an important part of my college major

Answer:

Keep an eye on CraigsList in your area for people giving up on ceramics and dumping equipment cheap. If you are handy and willing to chase bearings and other parts, you can build a kick wheel yourself. But you are going to have to solve the problem of getting things fired, even if it means making a bunch of things and carefully hauling them to the next county once a month.
