Question:

Air filter or intake??

I just bought a 2003 Malibu LS and immediately replaced the stock air filter with a high performance one. I defininitely noticed a torque increase and a great sound. Would i have different/better results with replacing the whole thing with a new intake?

Answer:

Sorry to break your yoke, but all that aftermarket air intake and filter do not increase you engine performance. The simple fact is it make loulder noise and make you think you get more power for it. As an auto mechanic for close to 20 years I see alot of that come to my shop. Most of those would cost you more money for nothing. If it truely work then car manufacture would install it as a original equipment on their car?truck, for the cost of less than 5 dollars to make the filter and cool air intake, they can now sell the car for 500 dollars more.
If you are referring to one of those so-called cold air intakes I personally don't think so. That metal tube stays in the hot engine compartment, so I don't see how the air can STAY cold traveling though it.
its all in your head anyone that does this will say that but the fact is that just the sound of your engine will change. All you are hearing is the sound of the engines cylinders drawing in air. post some dyno results and prove to us that an air filter actually maid a difference. Also if you put on a cold air intake that actually gets its air from out side the car's engine bay than you have to get the cars computer tuned to actually see any performance Gaines. Also a cold air intake is not a short peace of metal tubing that sits in the engine bay with a cone filter siting on the end. this type of intake is what known as a wast of money because the air filter is still sitting in the engine bay so as a result the engine cant get any outside air, all it can get is hot air inside the engine bay. As you know hot air is not as dense as cold air. As a result of your engine drawing in hot air it can not efficiently fill the cylinder with the proper air fuel mixture. but with cold air the engine can draw in more air and thus allow the cars computer to put in more fuel for better efficiency and better performance and gas mileage. Also the intake air temp sensor mod does not work either just in case you were curious about it, all it does is trick the cars computer into thinking that the engine needs more fuel so as a result the engine just runs richer and perfomance and fuel economy is lost. this mod is easy to spot just look for the black ash on peoples cars that race then namly honda civics and chevy cavillers.
