Aluminum will oxidize, but the aluminum oxide forms a coating over the remaining aluminum that prevents further corrosion. By contrast, iron oxide (better known as rust) will not form such a coating, it will warp and crumble and expose more iron to rust.
aluminum does react with oxygen to form aluminum oxide, but it is a reasonably stable compound.
Very unreactive aluminum oxide forms a thin layer on aluminum.
