Question:

Am I in a position to be able to care for a Great Dane?

I live in an apartment by myself, but have done a ton of research that says Great Dane's are great apartment dogsI work full timeI leave the house at 6:30 am and come home at 11 am and stay for an hour and come home again at 4 pmAfter 4 pm I'm home all night until I leave for work in the morningI rarely travel, and love to go for walks, and would love to have a buddy to go walking withThere is also a dog park at my apartment complexDoes it sound like the situation is alright for a dog?I know I'll provide the dog everything the dog needs, I just don't want to be unfair to a dog, with the apartment living and scheduleIn about a year I'll be moving into a house with my husband, but I'd like a dog to keep my company in this next year while he's away (deployed).

Answer:

I don't get bored, I do a lot on my computer, live next to the ocean so my dogs and walk along the beach almost every day, and living with Sawman, well he keeps me entertained, we work and play together

Your schedule is fineThe problem with apartments is puppies cry, make noises and bark - which can disturb other tenantsThat and the fact it is very hard to housebreak a dog if you are not on the ground floor with a garden An 8 week old puppy will not be able to hold walking down a hallway or in an elevator If you get an older dog you bypass the housebreaking problem but the barking and disturbance wont changeDogs tend to get more assertive with age - although over time, dogs can be acclimated to noises in hallways and become accustomed to themMany people have dogs that work full time - but not having a fenced yard to let the dog out in particularly in bad weather or cold weather (or if you are sick) is a real disadvantageIf your apartment is dog friendly and your neighbours are tolerant of dogs and you can get the dog out the door (before it craps in the hallway or elevator) then it should workI`m neutral on whether a Great dane is a good choice for apartments - if you buy from a breeder, ask themAnd realize some breeders will not sell to people without homes with fenced yards - its a whole new set of rules.
