Question:

any ideas for help with transmission problem?

I have 1996 Passat and the transmission is on its way out. It is totally fine once it‘s out of second gear, but it has a really hard time going from park to first to second, especially if it‘s been sitting for a few hours. Is there anything I can do to make this better while I save up to fix the transmission?

Answer:

Doe's it wind out before it shifts gears? Like real high then shifts hard? Check the vacuum lines for dryrot. There is one that goe's to your transmission, or a box on your transmission that may be leaking. On all cars I have worked on. Never messed with a passat. I hope this helped.
Well if your transmission is on the way out all you really can do is try changing the transmission fluid. I expect that you will send it to someone to have it done so expect 50-80 dollars (typically a little more than an oil change). Auto transmissions cost more b/c it has a filter while manual transmissions do not. Ask for something that has better wear protection and explain your circumstances. A good brand is REDLINE and it can stop grinding synchros and even make the transmission shift in gears it previously wouldn't, although you typically have to buy this off the internet and fill your self b/c depending where you live they may not carry it in stock at a oil/lube station. I wish i could help more. but i do advise if you have the time. take the car to a transmission shop and let them rebuild it if possible. Its a 1996 and i would rather have you spend 600-800 dollars instead of 3000. Just make sure the people are reliable and offer a decent warrenty
figure out what weight tranny oil/gear lube it take and ordre in the best stuff you can get. red line gear oil is deffinately the way to go. and try your hardest not to beat on it. so no hard accelerations.
