Question:

Are hand-tufted rugs durable?

Is it a good idea to buy hand-tufted rugs as they are inexpensive compared to hand-knotted rugs ? On average how long does both types last ?

Answer:

Have you Googled for locations they are sold? Yarn stores, Michaels, Joanns any place that sells yarn should have rug kits. If you want to make an exceptionally large one, at least you could get the name of a company from the packaging and e mail or phone them.

No, don't buy hand tufted rugs. They are made in India and China and it's tufted by using a gun..which is the cheapest way to make a pile rug ever. The tufted rug will rarely wear as well as the hand-knotted rug because the wool is almost certainly of a cheaper grade, and because the inexpensive latex glue used becomes brittle and deteriorates over time. A hand-tufted rug has resale value only equivalent to a machine-made rug of the same size.
Hand-tufted rugs are made by hand the fibers are gunned in to the backing. They are much nicer than machine made rugs. They are almost always wool and will wear for many years. It depends do you want your rug to last 10-30 years or forever. Hand knotted rugs get passed down from generation to generation. If you like to remodel frequently I would suggest hand-tufted, if you'd like to keep the piece I would suggest hand knotted. Purchase the rug you love. Hand knotted rugs are quite expensive compared to hand-tufted and machine made area rugs. Approximate cost comparison of 5 x 7 area rugs. Machine made area rug $100-$500. Hand- tufted would be $300-$800 Hand-knotted will be $400-$1000 Take care.
