The weather is saying that is going to be in the negatives the next few nightsI know that horses are built for the cold and are ok in cold weather but what if it is like -10 or -2My mare has an ok winter coat and i was wondering if i should blanket her when it gets that cold.
My horses have been out when the wind chill is minus 40 F without blankets, and done just fine.never got sick or even a sniffleIn fact, they prefer to stand outside despite having a cozy shelter to go intoIf you provide 24/7 hay, it will continually produce body heat like an internal furnace as it ferments, and that is better than blankets at keeping horses warm in winterWhen horses are allowed to grow a normal winter coat, they can withstand the coldOften blankets can actually interfere with a horse's ability to retain body heat by flattening the hair coat so it can't function to insulate (air pockets between hairs provide insulation), and if a horse perspires under the blanket, the horse may chillYour horse should do fine without blanketing, especially if you provide extra hay throughout the day and night if needed.
you can never get too much fiber.but drink lots of water.
