depends on the laptop, alien ware and i buy power work like a dream
It doesn't directly defect the performance, but Laptops are definitely not the best choice for gaming. Dell makes a line of computers (including laptops) that are specifically designed for gaming. They're called Alienware, and the laptops are pretty pricey. Frankly, for $1,500, you can get a laptop or a desktop. The desktop will have twice as much power for the same price.
A laptop can be just as capable as a desktop, but you have to pay for the extra portability. A gaming laptop will be considerably more expensive than a gaming desktop with identical specifications. As for comments in one of the other answers that laptops are fragile Yes, you can break a laptop if you drop it, but so what? What does that have to do with the capability of the laptop of running games? And as for them running hot, a laptop doesn't necessarily run any hotter than a desktop, though it might seem that way since you have the thing in your lap, and they can indeed run hot if you don't let it get enough ventilation. (A friend of mine complained about his laptop overheating and blamed the manufacturer. Then I pointed out that he puts the laptop on a pillow in his lap when he uses it, which completely blocks the air vents.) But again, that has little to do with the gaming capabilities of a laptop. And if heat is an issue, there are cooling pads and other products available to help with that.
Laptops really are not great for gaming. They are made for ease of use and portability which makes them small and fragile. Games use a lot of resources that laptops, frankly, cannot provide. Laptops also tend to run very hot, and gaming can only increase the probability that the laptop will fail under the heat. If you are looking to game, look at a much bulkier, meatier desktop alternative with plenty of fans and airflow. @ Matt B Yes being fragile affects a game's performance. A broken/damaged laptop will not run games. Laptops run very hot because there is no space on the casing to house fans, and no internal space for airflow. The heat is not important because of its discomfort to your lap, it is important because it basically cooks the internal components of your laptop (mostly cpu and any dedicated video cards), which severely shortens the lifespan of your pc. On another note, laptops generally offer little to no room for expansion. What you have is what you are stuck with (usually except for ram). You have no extra room for beefier components and will have to buy a completely new system instead of upgrading certain components.
