Question:

Are police legally allowed to lift up the cover on a SORN car?

my car has been impounded, as it was apparently on public highway, the car was covered and the number plates were covered also. Is there anything I can do?

Answer:

In the UK I suppose the police can lift up covers, so to check the identity of the car. If it was on private property and was covered by sorn then I can't see how they could impound your vehicle, regardless of being covered.
Nope. Most places have limits as to the amount of time a car can be parked alongside a public highway. (Generally only a few hours.) And police always inventory the contents of an impounded vehicle so that somebody cannot come back later and claim that something was stolen.
