Question:

Are there alternatives to parchment paper when baking?

I've been planning to make a particular Christmas cookie recipe for weeksI made sure I had the ingredients beforehand, but when I went to start on it this afternoon, I realized it says to use parchment paper on the baking sheetDon't know how I overlooked that, but there it wasI don't have any parchment paper and neither of the two nearest grocery stores carries itIs it possible to get the same results from using aluminum foil on the cookie sheet instead? (That's what I typically use for cookies even if the recipe does not call for a liner on the baking pan.) If not, are there any other alternate solutions I might already have? I'd rather not make a special trip into town if I don't have to.Thanks everyone and Merry Christmas!

What did your grandmother use? she for sure didn't go get any such thing as parchment paper!! In fact until I purchased the bakery in 1980 I didn't even know the name of that stuff much less think of using itThe food gurus and food police will diss this but I use copy paper(not one little boy has died of chewing up some notebook or Big Chief Tablet to shoot spit balls at the teacher's back or over her head) I also use notebook paper, brown paper bags, white paper bags, etc or not use anything at all other than if the recipe calls for it, greasing the cookie sheetYou can also lay the butter wrappers on the cookie sheet if you have enough of themYes, you can use your aluminum foilIt keeps the baking sheets super clean and clean up is merely tossing the used foil in the trashTemperatures you will be baking at are not high enough to catch notebook or copy paper on fire in the oven!! The foods we bake do not require length of time in the ovens to catch notebook or copy paper on fireNo danger there! And the temperatures we bake at WILL kill any bacteria that might be on the papersI have no idea at all why most of these recipes call for parchment paper! Meringues and Macaroons, yes, they are egg white and cannot be on greased surface and do stick to the baking sheets.
