Question:

Are turn signals required for a small motorcycle in Colorado/.?

I am trying to get my motorcycle license, and need to take the drivers test on my 90cc honda trail bike. It doesn‘t have turn signals, but does have the rest of the necessary lighting. Are these required or are hand signals sufficient?

Answer:

Turn Signals For Motorcycles
In Colorado all that is required is: headlight with both hi and low beams tail light horn one brake (front or rear) one mirror (left or right) license light (unless illuminated by tail light) tyres must be DOT approved helmet (if under 18) eye protection (even with a windscreen) brake light (one) is only needed only if bike is manufactured after 01July1941 turn signals have never been required by state law, but federal regulation requires them on new bikes and can only be removed by owner not dealer (much like a mattress tag) mufflers are not required but there are noise standards in place for state and some localities (a spark arrestor is required on USFS and BLM land even if on a state or county road) In Colorado motorcycles are exempt from emission testing
In order to take the drivers test on that bike it would have to be street legal. Display a current tag and inspection stick (if inspection is required in your state). In order to be considered road worthy all motorcycles made since 1965 have had to have turnsignals on them from the factory, to be considered streetable. You may be able to mount a set but even used it will cost at least $100 for the signals, signal relay, handlebar switch etc. Then if you are not mechanically inclined enough, you will have to pay someone to install the system for you, costing more money. Better to borrow a friends legally licensed motorcycle to take the test on.
