Speaking as a proud Democrat who tends to run the gamut from prude on social manners to moderate on fiscal matters to liberal (left wing?) on matters of social justice for all, I'll hazard a guess on what you, as a probably right-winger neocon or Faux-fed propaganda enthusiast, might attribute to what you call left winger...by which I've assumed you might mean Liberal Democrat (a.k.a., tree-hugging bleeding heart). People who let themselves feel compassion for others (i.e., Liberals especially) could not possibly do as you suggest and withdraw into isolation---that is a Romney feature, as evidenced by his almost complete lack of or interest in social skills. Liberals are very soft-hearted, very concerned about ecology, free-spirited joie de vivre, justice and equality for everyone---doesn't seem like interests for those who seek isolation. Contrast these positive attributes with the anal-retentive uptight judgemental rigidity of the psycho-pseudo-christian-fundamentalist... in control of the GOP and one then wonders if you have succumbed to the Republican habit of PROJECTING one's own foibles or failings onto innocent others in true Nietzsche fashion. The movie that would best describe the right-wing CULT-controlled ruthless nation-destroying Republicans might have something to do with GREED (Wall Street or PBS's Frontline: Inside The Meltdown) and Nazism.

If you're asking about a book with that plot line, I have not come across one. If you are asking if liberals have withdrawn into their own little world, that would be a no.
I couldn't have said it better myself. They are so far out there that they feel and have stated that it is OK now to not work, its cool to let the nation take care of you. They were raised wrong and then expect the tax payer to fit the bill for this.
