Electrical tape is the electricians answer to Duct Tape.I like that.I'll have to remember that one. You can use it backwardssticky side UP.to roll up large sets of blueprints when you don't have a large enough rubber band also. But I don't think that is really what 3M had in mind when they started making their products.lol. Electricians will use anything to secure items.like romex or #12 wire for ladders on the back of trucks. Aren't we a resourceful bunch of guys?? lol. Technically?.NO?!?!?! 3M makes other kinds of tape for waterproofing that should be covered by electrical tape. The only time you wrap a wirenut with electrical tape is when you have no other option.like the correct size of wirenutand you're a 100 miles away from the nearest supply house or your boss is too cheap to buy the right stuff.
It's used for taping up a bunch of wires for pulling through a wall or conduit. No don't bother with tape on the base of your wire nuts.
I don't know about marking large guage wires unless you are referring to colored electrical tape. There are many uses for electrical tape as a insulating factor. And yes, taping the wire nuts is a good deterrent to moisture getting to the wire connection
If I nick a wire while stripping it, I will use tape to repair it. I bundle certain wires together using electrical tape. I mark large gauge wires as you mentioned, and I threaten to use it on my jabbering apprentices. Using it at the base of a wire nut is the mark of a non professional wire person. Same with wrapping it around a switch or receptacle. No real electrician does that. No need to. And it irritates the next real electrician who works on it. black red blue brown orange yellow white and green and little sticky numbers
Besides marking service cable for polarity. When you tie wire onto a snake it is best if the snake and wire are taped as this acts as a cover so the wire or snake doesn't snag or come loose as it is being fished through a wall.
