Question:

Best Performance Exhaust System for a mid to late 80s Suburban.?

I want to get one and hook it up a little, so i like to do research first. Any ideas what exhaust system would give me the best performance and sound for anything between a 350 and a 454? I hear a lot of good talk about Flowmasters and what not, but i wouldn‘t know which ones would be best, or if there is even a better option out there for someone looking for good performance and a low throaty sound. Any help will be appreciated, thanks

Answer:

to hard to do laying on the ground a hoist is nessesary
You do want to convert it over if you don't know how the system works It is far more expensive to fix so you do want to convert it over. You would need either really good jacks or a hoist i would suggest finding a garage that knows how to do the conversion its not that difficult but you need to have the car up in the air.
On the 350's if you do a dual system with just about anyone's 'turbo' mufflers and universal high flow cats (if you need them) you usually get a all around decent system. Its only slightly louder than stock at idle and cruise so you don't piss people in your neighborhood or cops off all the time but if you stop on it you get a pretty loud growl out of it so you can have fun and make noise if you want to. I have found Dynomax makes decent stuff that seems to be much less expensive than many of the other popular brands so if you dont have a ton of money to spend on this they may be worth looking at.
Personaly i think flow masters are more for muscle cars, for a car bigger than a CrownVic/GrandMarquis/towncar i think a borla. it sounds like chuck norris wrestleing a cobra riding on a rino thats high on pcp into a siz 2 wedding dress while screaming at a duncun donuts guy. pretty good for a GD truck. And if ur hooking it up with a new audio system for the best sound go for harmon cardon. For more of a low rida gansta feel, get either a Posner or a Pioneer radio and get a few 13 inch speakers in the back and some warfers in it to. and never forget the tinted windows and the neons under the car i saw it on a chrysler 300 and it looked cool. and if youre restorin it, i guese i was no help.
Flomaster has PLENTY of very mellow and subdued mufflers. The 50 and 80 series mufflers are very mellow. The secret is this: Any naturally aspirated 90 degree firing order V8 operation at less or up to 7,000 rpm will ALWAYS make more torque and horsepower with a single exhaust, not duals. You can also get a single inlet/dual outlet Flowmaster for the dual look. I would stick with the factory pipe diameter if the engine is stock, has a stock cam, etc. Just buy a Flowmaster having the same pipe diameter as the factory pipe. A single 40 series or a single super 44 series will make PLENTY of interior/exterior noise if noise is one thing you want. I prefer to gain power and mileage out of the exhaust mods first, and make it even quieter second. That's what you call a 'sleeper'. LOL. All bite no bark. Put a new high flow catalytic converter on it in place of the old flat pellet style unit. That will wake it up in both performance and sound, too.
