Question:

Bike riding safety wisdom - covering front brake with your fingers at all times - is it possible?

I‘ve heard this biker wisdom that you‘ve got to learn to keep your front brakes covered during riding, and it will save you precious seconds during braking. Agreeing to all this, I‘ve found that it‘s somewhat difficult to do this, since you‘ve got to turn the throttle as well. Especially when you are turning the throttle more, it appears to me that it‘s plain impossible to even reach the brake lever with one finger. Can anyone explain what is actually meant to be done about covering the front brake with your fingers?

Answer:

I agree with stanly, cover it in the high-risk riding situations and don't bother in safer conditions. swflstee: if you can't control the bike, throttle, and brakes at the same time you shouldn't be riding. Braking with the throttle still open is an essential skill in racing so it's not exactly impossible either. Also, covering the brake doesn't not mean applying the brake constantly, it means one or two fingers on the lever for quick reaction times when needed.
I have been riding for over 35 years and never do I cover the front brake lever. It is impossible to control the bike and throttle and front brake at the same time. Motorcycles were designed for this purpose having the front brake lever on throttle side, hence when you brake, your hand is off the throttle and hitting the brakes. Who in their right mind would throttle up and ride the front brake at same time since the front brake does 75% of the stopping power.
MSF courses tell you to cover the clutch lever, not the brake.
