Question:

Boiler-Water Softner?

Can I add a water softener to the iron piping that feeds and returns water to my homes hot water boiler? I suspect there is scaling inside the pipes and also wonder if this would help at all,Thanks

Answer:

Once a boiler is filled with water and the air purged out, it never takes on water again unless you open the the system for some type of maintenance or there is a leak, any water thats added would have miminal mineral deposit such as a hot water heater, that take on water every time you turn on a tap.
If you have bad iron pipes low water pressure or leaks the only thing that will help is replacement.
Water softner will not help, but the iron that is leached in the water will not hurt either, exept for the sediment in the hot water boiler. If you have iron piping for the cold water, the iron is actually beneficial in the drinking water. To get rid of the iron, install a filter at the water heater intake or change the pipes to copper or pvc.
