Question:

Bunk beds or toddler beds?

My boyfriend has two 3 yr old boys. They come to our house once a month. We would like to buy them beds. Would you get toddler beds or would you get bunk beds? My boyfriend is concerned about bunk beds, he doesn't want them sleeping up high. But I think they could both sleep on the bottom for a while but he doesn't want them to sleep in the same bed because they move around alot a night. What would you do?

Answer:

I would buy one of the bunk beds with a double bed at the bottom and a single on top. That way they can both sleep in the double while there still young but can play on the top. Also when they're older it would solve a lot of problems concerning top or bottom Would you rather sleep on top or would you like more space?
I think you can get bunk beds that seperate into two beds. That way you could have them as two regular beds now, and you could change them to a bunk bed when they get older and need more space to move around. I wouldn't bother with toddler beds. I think those are a money making scheme. Regular height beds are just fine.
I would go with the toddler bed if you have to, not the bunk beds. Or you could always graduate your daughter to a big girl bed and give your son the toddler bed. My daughter recently went from a crib to a twin bed with no problems whatsoever - we simply put it in the middle of the room away from walls and installed two extra long safety rails, then we taught her the safe way to climb down at the foot of the bed. She's fine with it at 25 months, and we didn't have to waste money on any other transitional bed. I have heard that bunkbeds are very dangerous. Even big kids can fall off easily or get hurt, and it would be hard to keep your little climber from going up there and following his big sis.
I think it depends on the children. I can't say I would put them in a toddler bed, the weight limit on most only goes up high enough for a 4 year old so that might be a waste of money. Is there room for 2 twin size beds? I can tell you this. At age 2 1/2 my oldest was sleeping in a loft type bed (like a bunk bed without the bottom bunk, it has a fort type area underneath). He's still in it at 4 1/2 and has never once fallen out or had any problems at all. It does have a tent over the top of it so that would help prevent him from falling. But, he does not move at all when he sleeps; he is a VERY deep sleeper. I have an 18 month old and there is no way he will be going in that bed until close to age 4 (at least), he moves around all night long. I think that is a big factor when considering a bunk bed for a young child.
Get the bunk beds---but have them both on the floor as twin beds. I wouldn't worry about them sleeping on the top bunk as much as I would worry about them playing on the ladder, learning to climb the outside of the bunk bed instead of the ladder, jumping or swinging down off the top and getting hung up on the top railing, etc. I am NOT saying that bunk beds are a bad idea for young kids---just that kids like to do inappropriate things with them. It sounds like in your circumstances the novelty of the bunk beds is not going to wear off for a long time---so they will be more inclined to do unsafe stuff on them. Keep the bunks on the floor and in a couple of years you can put them up.
