I'm not asking about an Intl Drivers License. I know about those. I just want to know if anyone has gotten a Japanese Drivers License on SOFA status while being in Japan.
I was able to get a Japanese Drivers License (JDL) while having a SOFA license but... I was less than a month from my retirement date and already had my gaikokujin toroku (resident alien card) in hand. The official at the license bureau was very specific that I had to show my JDL from then on. My wife, who is a Japanese citizen, was able to get both a JDL and a SOFA license while I was still in since in order to drive a SOFA car one must possess a SOFA drivers license. It would seem to me that if you are in Japan solely under SOFA status you will not get a JDL but that if you are in Japan and have status other than SOFA (i.e. Japanese citizen or resident alien) you can have both.
Marriage is for better or worst, all marriages have a hard start in the beginning. Most couples are broke, some more than others. Love can't put a roof over your heads or food on the table but it can keep you guys together until that happens. Its harder with a little one because they need constant care. Try to find jobs, and who ever can find the one that pays the most will work, other one will stay at home with baby.
No, because SOFA status people are not citizens nor residents of Japan to obtain the license. They are simply there on SOFA status only and soon will leave. If you want to drive in Japan, you get a SOFA license from your local military driving transportation office. If you are in Okinawa, you obtain it from Camp Foster Marine Corps Base (my friend is there right now). Even if you were to get one it's extremely hard to obtain, even for the Japanese.
