Question:

Can a water pump go out after hitting a deer?

Car started making noises right after hitting deer, week later car that has never had a problem began to overheat and mechanic says water pump went out and that it has nothing to do with hitting the deer.

Answer:

water pumps sometimes just go. just like most other auto parts the water pump will give little or no notice. get it to a garage quick!!! call around in your local area for the best estimate and go with them. replacement can be somewhat costly depending on your car. don't forget to replace the timing chain at the same time. if your car is close to the 80,000 mile mark the timing chain could go soon. to get to the water pump you remove most of the parts in the front end so you might as well replace the timing chain while you already payed to go that far. timing chains go for around$60-$80. i replaced my own in a truck a few years ago ,so take my advice and do both if you plan on keeping your car. i'm from n.h., we have alot of deer related accidents. i hope he was tasty!!!
It could have had something to do with it if the radiator was damaged. This is the problem with new cars everything is hidden so you need to replace a half dozen good parts so you can fix the one thats bad. In the not to long ago days you would have went to the auto store, plunked down about $20.00 for a new pump went home and after taking out maby 4 bolts, had the new one on and been back on the road in an hour or so. If your not old enough to remember those days then it doesn't matter. Your going to pay maby 6-8 hundred dollars to replace a 50 dollar part.
It might If the water pump has lots of miles anything might make it go bad , Any accident will cause your car to act funny because it has not been disturbed
