I have a asus vh236h that can go up to 1920x1080 max but can it do 1080i?
No. LCD monitors are progressive displays and cannot display interlaced video(e.g. 1080i). Unless the monitor has component inputs like HP LP2475w, it is very unlikely that it will have a deinterlacer which can convert 1080i to 1080p then display it.
720p 1280 x 720 1080p (or i) 1920 x 1080 Yes you can display 1080, it's just a matter of whether it's interlaced or progressive (i vs p).
