Well, for hand spinning, what happens is that the combination of the twist and tension causes the fibers to catch and hold togetherI'm not sure exactly how it works with plant fibers, but I know with wool, the fibers are actually quite rough on a microscopic scale, and it's almost like there are little tiny hooks that catch on each other (this is a horrible explanation, but you get the gist)I assume smoother fibers are prepared in a manner that roughens them up enough for this to work.
