Can anyone give me a good reason on why a field trip to a fire station would be fun?

Go to a parts store and get some WD40 some spray white grease. Lay under the dash (wear safety goggles or a face shield. Way up inside the dash you will see the pedal pivot(s). Hose them down with the WD40. Work the pedals a number of times, and squirt them again. Repeat as necessary. After the noise is gone, spray the white grease up there. The white grease will last much longer than the WD40. The WD40 will loosen and remove any rust or residue in the bushing, and will help to thin the white grease and allow it to work into the joint
