Question:

Can cat. converter cause transmission to fail?

Hey everyone,My 02 Jetta has no reverse at the moment, and the mechanic says something came loose in the back of the transmission. However, he scanned for codes and found a Catalytic converter below bank threshold message which states that the converter is causing the fluids in the transmission to overheat.Since the catalytic converter has a 10-year warranty, could I have a case with making VW pay for the transmission services? After all, the converter did cause this!Thoughts?

Answer:

Your trouble code indicates a leaking or damaged catalytic converter. Nothing I am aware of indicates it caused the transmission fluid to overheat. That will be tough to prove the catalytic converter caused the damage.
the catalytic converter in no way related to the transmission. it's just coincidence that you have a code for it at the same time. there is no way you will be able to get VW to warranty transmission work for a bad cat.
These transmissions are JUNK--- the 01m trans your car has is worthless, really. Many fail before 100k, and its a miracle if they last beyond 150k. Do a search, its pretty common. Maintenance doesnt even help really. Save for a 5 speed stickshift conversion. I cant see how a bad cat would cause a bad transmission-- really, explain that one to me lol.
