Hi guys! A furnace tech came over to my house today to do routine maintenance on the gas furnace. At the end, he told me that the quot;heat exchangerquot; in the furnace was plugged and needed to be cleaned, and that it would cost $250 to do so ($400 if he had to come back another time). This sounded kind of shady and so I declined. My question, can the quot;heat exchangerquot; in a gas furnace actually become clogged? Thanks!
Heat exchangers do corrode, but that's generally on the outside, the part the flames contact. I have never heard of them clogging.
Hi there, My thought is you did exactly the right thing. It sounds shady to me too. I have never heard of a furnace heat exchanger becoming plugged either. Why not call your local gas company to send someone to check it out. They will tell the truth and if it really is plugged they either could clean it for less money or recommend someone. Hope this helps, Al
