Question:

Can I plant a new tree in the same spot as I removed the old 1?

I cut down a ratty old tree, and dug the stump up with an excavator, my question is... Since I removed the old root ball, can I plant a new tree in the same hole.?? It a great spot to shade my house! Some have told me put it in a different place, but I really want it in the original spot. Will a new tree make it there??

Answer:

You can b ut I recommend having a soil test done first. The old tree took lots of nutrients out of the soil. You need to know what nutrients you need to add for your new tree. Soil test can be done through your County Agent's office for a small fee. Your CA can also make recommendations on the type of tree to plant and when to plant at no charge. LOL
Thinking outside the box,why plant a replacement tree in the exact same spot?If there are any remnants of the old roots, they'll decay and could lead to infections such as bootlace fungus. If this happens the new tree is liable to die. A tree which will shade a house at maturity is going to be big,(Oak,Willow,Chestnut?)Planting the replacement a few yards from the original will give the same end result.Moving a little way from the old site into fresh soil could avoid lots of work and avoid possible problems later.
Of course you can, If you backfilled the plot with garden soil then you don't need to worry about soil fertility as trees will easily thrive on your garden soil.
As long as you didn't use any type of chemical stump remover, planting a new tree there will be fine.
Yes but considering the old one must have drained the soil out of its nutrients it is recommended that you mix the soil with some compost (not organic matter, I know it's good but first it smells second, you might see new creepy insects coming out of the ground depending on where the organic matter came from) so feed the ground next plant your happy-to-be tree.
