Rod bearings can be replaced just by dropping the pan. That should be just a preventative measure however. If you're hearing a rod knock the crankshaft journals are probably damaged and need to be reground or the crank itself needs to be replaced.
Really you need to take the head off also.It would be hard getting at the piston end bearing by just dropping the sump.
