That's normal. Don't tell him because your probably going to get braces pretty soon like I did. Also it was supposed to space that much to get your teeth ready for braces. Don't try to make it have less space...or look less severe, because thats what it was made to do. Just wait!
If your teeth are separated like that then the expander is doing its job. It looks dumb with a huge gap in your two front teeth, but its just something that you gotta go through. Once the braces come on your teeth will actually slide back together and it will look better. It's worth it in the end.
