Question:

Can you add a 5th string to a 4 string bass?

There's a violin bass guitar that I'm gonna get eventually, but I want one with 5 stringsIs it possible to send it out to get a 5th string added to it? Or better yet, can Violin basses come with 5 strings? If so does anyone know where I could obtain one with 5 strings?

Answer:

I've never seen a 5 string - probably because it's a short-scale instrumentThe neck is also pretty thin, so changing the nut and bridge and adding a tuning machine probably wouldn't be possible even at great expenseYou could add a Hip-shot Drop D tuner to the E string - that would expand the rangeIf you have the $$$ you could contact Hofner in Germany to see if they could custom make you a 5 string.
