Im 14 and I want to record me preforming some classic rock songs burn them on a cd and ask a record shop to give them away...Is this illegal??? The main reason I want to do this is to get my name known and maybe pick up some gigs. So main question is illegal to burn cover songs on a cd????? And I want to do this and be able to give them away without getting in trouble. Thanks in advance!!!
Of course you can....as long as you're not selling it. If you're doing it just to hand it out for fun, then it's 100% legal, and it'd be known as a mixtape. If you plan on selling it, you better talk to the copyrights and get the rights.
You can record anything you want on a CD if it's for your own use or enjoyment. You can't publish or distribute your versions of songs written by other peope without permission of the copyright holders though..
