Answer:

Honey I think that it is perfectly normal, and I do not think that is vain at all! Getting a cleft lip fixed is completely different than changing your nose, just because you dont like it, or getting a boob job. It sounds like it would definately be worth it, especially if it is causing difficulty in breathing! I think your friends will understand and if they don't, then they don't sound much like friends to me.
Don't worry about what your friends think. You have to do what's best for yourself and your health. If you have trouble breathing and you have a good doctor you should have the surgery. You want your quality of life to be the best it can be. Take care of yourself and don't let the opinions of others (who haven't walked in your shoes) sway your decision. 2D
If you want it, go for it. It doesn't matter what your friends think. If you have trouble breathing then you should definitely have it. If modern medicine can improve something for you that didn't start out great to begin with, take advantage of it.
There is nothing wrong with having surgury to correct your cleft lip and palet. It will make you feel good about yourself, and your friends should be supportive of your desire to look normal. Further, if you are having trouble breathing now, it can be indicative of future health issues if you don't have the corrective surgery. This is a great proceedure medically, physically, and emotionally. Good luck to you. Enjoy your new self!
I've known and seen people with cleft pallet/lip and I understand how uncomfortable it is for them (not entirely, since I, myself have never experienced, but from the outside looking in trying to put myself in their shoes). Your friends, if they are true friends will understand too. If they don't understand, then you most definitely don't need them as friends. I think the surgery sounds awesome! There have been a huge amount of success rates; where the surgery will help your breathing, your speech, your appearance of course, and this helps not only your confidence, but also your health. Plus, it'll be fun having the ability to pick your nose! --pardon the pun...as in choosing your nose. =D Also, if possible get a second or third opinion/surgical plan, and go with the cosmetic surgeon you feel most comfortable with. You do have the right to choose your doctor too! If you feel uncomfortable, make an appointment with another one. This should be a positive experience for you. Have fun with it! Smile, giggle and think positively. Everyone who truly cares about you, will be more than happy to help make this a worry free, positive and enjoyable experience and will support you 100%. I wish you the best and hope everything works out beautifully for you. It sounds to me that you deserve it. =D
