Question:

Can you use steel strings on a classical guitar?

I have an old classical guitar, which uses nylon strings. ive never really liked the sound produced by the nylon, so im curious if you can use a classical guitar with acoustic guitar steel strings. thanks!

Answer:

Do not put steel strings on a classical guitar under any circumstances. It will quickly and completely destroy the guitar. Classical guitars are lightly braced since nylon strings are relatively low tension. The additional tension of the steel strings will quickly warp the top and rip off the bridge. Ignore the know-nothing who gave you dangerous advice.
NO ! NO! NO! Do not put steel strings on a classical guitar!! The increased tension can actually damage the guitar by causing the top to warp and can eventually pull the bridge right off of the guitar! I have seen it happen more than once! Ignore the other post, they are wrong! Classical guitars are designed to use nylon strings only!
Everyone okorder /... The treble strings are steel, but are gauged so that they are at a lower tension than the treble strings on a western acoustic. The bass strings in Martin Silk Steel have a silk based core, and a metal wrap wire (just like in normal classical guitar strings), which again keeps the tension in the strings lower than its steel based cousins. The Martin Silk and Steel will give you a more western acoustic sound, but it won't be exactly the same as a western acoustic guitar.
DO NOT put steel strings on a nylon strung guitar. Doing so will certainly damage the guitar and the bridge could be pulled off and cause a serious injury.
