It's probably cheaper to have real carpet installed. I've heard that these things can shift over time, and many times you can see that they're squres (the seams).
If they are glued down properly, they are very durable. In fact carpet squares are commonly used in commercial and industrial buildings. They can be installed with different color and textures creating a checkerboard pattern also. The downside is that they have no padding.
Here are a couple of things to use carpets squares for, there are many more uses. Some people will afix them to their walls, like in the cold basement. Like fixing up teenaged JRs new bedroom. Some make a design on their wall or ceiling with them. Some people will use them to replace the carpet on their cats' house-stand-climber, or use them to make a catscratch for the cat. Someone else will attatch a piece to the side of their couch or chair, so the cat does not destroy those items. These people were happy with that.
Using the carpet squares is very much like using the the hardwood flooring paneling or using ceramic tile. If done correctly they work relativly well as long as it's a small weave carpet. The important things to make sure of is that 1) The grain of the carpet all goes the same way 2) Make sure they all fit together well. If you have a piece that doesn't quite fit... toss it and use another one. 3) Make sure they are well adhered to the floor. If they are not securely glued they will shift with use and after a few months it will look like you used carpet squares.
