How hard/ costly is it to convert a automatic transmission to a manual? is it worth it? i want a Supra sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo bad but all i can find under $30,000 are automatics. so i was thinking i could drop a manual trans. and throw a turbo in there and call it a beast. is it even worth it? lol
Dan B has it mostlly right. Transmission Crossmember MAY need to be changed. Driveshaft almost cerainly. He forgot the Pedals and Hydraulics for the 3rd Pedal !! You will need to get a Clutch pedal and master and slave for the throwout bearing. The firewall should have a rubber plug or a metal punch-out. for the Clutch Master Cylinder. Then there's the brake line to the slave. You shoundn't have any problem with the shifter, but you'll need the manual version of the center console with the stick boot. You may be able to get the brake and clutch pedals for a manual and bolt them in. Or you may need to replace the assembly. You can look under there to see if they have a bracket to bolt up a clutch pedal. You really don't need a new ECM, but the MIL will come on. You may be able to unplug the TCM to stop the light from coming on. It's not an easy job, but can be done. I did it to a Mazda MX6.but I had a wrecked parts car with all the pieces I needed.
If you want a manual transmission sooooooooooooooooo etc bad, you may as well just pay for one, because that will be cheaper than the conversion.
Pull the old transmission and torque converter. Install a new fly wheel and clutch plates. Install manual transmission. May have to replace the rear transmission support because it will be in the wrong location. May have to replace the drive shaft because the length will not be correct. Change the engine computer software so that it recognizes a manual transmission. Install a new shift handle and linkage. Expect more mods that I have missed. Most likely the cost is in the neighborhood of $5,000 IF it can be done at all. If they offer the car as a manual transmission, it would be easier because the parts are already in the chain.
