Question:

Ceramics!!!?

In Ceramics what does Score mean. I need this by today thanks.

Answer:

The word score usually goes to together the word slip: Score and slip refers to a method of joining two pieces of clay together. First, score the clay; this means that you make scratches in the surfaces that will be sticking together. Then you slip it; that is you wet the surface with some slip, using it like glue. Next, you press the two pieces together. It is very important to always score and slip clay that is leather hard. If you do not, the pieces will likely pop apart when they are fired.
Score, as it applies to ceramics, means to scratch . The best way to do this is to use a rib or tool with a saw tooth like edge to make a good deep scratch in the clay. It is best to use the tool and not something too sharp like a pin tool because in the next step you will apply a slip and if the bottom of the scratch is too sharp the slip won't go in there and a thin line of bubbles will be trapped which may cause a crack later on. Scoring is used when joining leather hard clay pieces with slip in handbuilding . Dry clay can be joined with paperclay slip zfter scoring.
Score means that you make several shallow indented marks with a pointy tool into the wet clay.
