Question:

choice for furnace crucible?

i'm making a charcoal furnace and i need a good cruciblei'm not getting a metal one cause it will oxidize and just flake off so i'm either getting ceramic, glass or porcelainwhich one is the most resistant to heat shock? btw, i know it seems like it's in the wrong category but i think that the sciency people here should know so thanks in advance!

Answer:

Unfortunately, a possum will eat anything.
The standard crucible is a special glazed ceramic materialIt is made reasonably thin so that it will withstand a degree of thermal shockHowever in your furnace it heats and cools gently so thermal shock is not an issueMerely high temperature stabilityMost glasses are useless as they melt at too low a temperatureAnd as glass is a supercooled liquid it tends to become reactive as it gets hotter so it may affect whatever you are wishing to heat.
