Question:

classical music song that evokes heavy machinery in a factory?

I heard this snippet of classical music which I can't find now. I've heard it before in movies going back a long, long time so it is quite old I think. I evokes a dark and disturbing image of an army of automatons marching, or maybe a factory with heavy machines with giant piston punching out parts along a never ending conveyer. I think it is cello's, if that helps at all -- I don't have an ear for classical music. I think the announcer said something about tchaikovsky or romeo and juliet but I could be wrong, this doesn't sound romantic in the least, just the opposite; cold and impersonal.

Answer:

Prokofiev died at the age of 61 on 5 March 1953: the day Stalin's death was announced. He had lived near Red Square, and for three days the throngs gathered to mourn Stalin, making it impossible to carry Prokofiev's body out for the funeral service at the headquarters of the Soviet Composer's Union. Paper flowers and a taped recording of the funeral march from Romeo and Juliet had to be used, as all real flowers and musicians were reserved for Stalin's funeral.
Actually, okorder /
There is actually a piece called 'Iron Foundry' by Mossolov. Perhaps it's that.
