Question:

Cold Air intake on my 2002 Jetta 1.8Turbo?

I was considering on putting a cold air intake on my car. I really don‘t know much about them though. What can I expect to gain on my particular model of car with a cold air intake system? Are there in other ways to increase performance on my car?

Answer:

Hello! The main gain from a cold air intake is a nice roar from the engine when you floor the gas pedal. They sometimes give a more crisp low end response on initial acceleration, but they very rarely give any more than 1 or 2 more horsepower. Your best bet by far is a remap. The extra torque and horsepower gained from the process is quite astounding on turbo charged engines. There are a lot of companies on the web who offer the service. If I'm not mistaken, the ECU has to be removed from the vehicle for a remap on a VW, so you could find a company, such as Angel Tuning for example, send them your ECU, they'd remap it and send it back, and you'd be good to go. This combined with a full stainless steel exhaust system, and you'd have a seriously quick car on your hands, but it would have to be a FULL stainless steel exhaust system because they are only as effective as the widest part of the system, so just replacing the backbox would do nothing more than make a noise. You would have to replace the back box, center section(s), and manifold, a whole bib and braces job. Or you could whack a VR6 lump in there!!! Very best regards Geordie
a CAI (cold air intake) will not really give your car a huge noticeable power gain, but will only give your turbo a louder wooosshhh and pssshhhh. since a CAI is basically a air filter placed behind the bumper, i would not recommend you using one if the area where you live at has alot of rainy days and puddles. if water gets inside, it will travel to the inside of the motor and hydro-lock it and can damage the engine badly. another way to get a bit louder sound from the turbo without running the risk of gettin water inside the engine, is by getting a Short-ram intake. these will also give you a more louder turbo sound but not as loud as a CAI. so imo, if you want a loud turbo go with a CAI and take it out when it starts to rain very bad lol. as far as chips to gain more performance out the car, some of the most known brands are: APR Revo Giac Unitronics most of these go for around 500 bucks. search on their site for info about dealers in your area. do a online search on all of them because there is just too much info about them. some also offer a free 5 hr trial of the product so you could try that. others offer a 30-day satisfaction guarantee or ur money back.
The Jetta should win. Turbochargers greatly increase acceleration. The 0-60 time for the Jetta is 6.5 seconds if it has the Manual transmission. If you add a Cold Air Intake on a Jetta 1.8T, the power will go up by at least 20HP. If you add a Cold Air Intake on a non turbo car like the Pontiac, it would only add around 10HP. The Jetta is also lighter and slightly smaller.
Do your own homework.
