Question:

cold air intakes, do they really work?

Do cold air intakes really get you better gas mileage, I heard with more air you need more gas with it?

Answer:

The other answerers are correct. The Cold Air Intake won't give you much horsepower really (maybe 3-10 depending on what kind of car) but it is not really noticable unless you are at full throttle. What it does is basically make your car sound better (deeper) and ride smoother. They have many benefits as adding some gas mileage, make your car run better with more power (nothing major but it's there) and you don't have to replace them (the filter - I would go with KN) for a new one. You can go buy a kit from your local parts store or clean them out with regular water and then reinstall. They are awesome. I have them on both of my cars and it makes a big difference than what the stock part came. I would go for it. Good luck with your ride.
A cold air intake allows slightly more air to enter your engine, per combustion (lower temp smaller volume). This means more oxygen is in your combustion chamber, which means a more complete combustion. A more complete combustion means more power coming from your engine. Think of it like a passive supercharger (which actually FORCES air into your engine, bringing a pressure difference into the situation instead of just temperature)
u are not getting more air with a cold air intake u r getting a colder ari which means more air density so it will give you on average 5 to 15 more horses it will not really affect your gas mileage if anything it will help improve it but that is about it, when going with a cold air intake i do advise going with AEM for the parts and if you car is newer realize that u will be voiding the warranty on the engine if you install it your self as a pose fo if you get an ase certified tech to do it it will only void the warranty on your intake system
