Question:

Computer LCD monitor has no power?

I moved house recently (from Australia to Italy) and shipped my computer over. I got it today and plugged it in and all worked fine until about half an hour after using it the monitor just went dead, no power at all. The computer still works fine but the monitor won't switch on anymore. I have tried swapping power cables and sockets but still no good and there power voltage/specification are the same in Australia and Europe (240). I was always worried the monitor would be damaged in the move but it looks fine and was working perfectly for a while. Has anyone any suggestions on what could have happened? Are LCD monitors worth fixing or is it cheaper to buy a new one? It is a great monitor and don't really won't to lose it.Thanks for any help,Grazie

Answer:

Does the monitor power indicator light come on? If so, try it on another PC. The video card may have loosened from the socket during the move. It is cheaper to buy a new monitor than get it repaired. Test it thoroughly before you toss it. Try another power and video cable.
When a monitor quits it is usually junk. Here in the US it costs almost as much to have the shop just look at it than to buy one of the newer cheaper ones. But look closely. There may be a little circuit breaker or switch that you may have touched. It is also quite possible that the video card has become loose inside the box.
A 15 CRT monitor would likely use a little more electricity than a 20 LCD monitor. We're talking maybe 40 watts versus 75 watts, so still low numbers.
Monitor No Power
It isn't necessary the power supply, but unless you have an outrageously expensive monitor it's probably going to be to expensive to fix then replace. If the power button still lights up, check the vid card and cable to the monitor. If it doesn't come on it's toast. You may want to check with the manufacturer if you haven't already and make sure it's not still under warranty. According to this map voltage and frequency in AU and Italy are the same
