Question:

Connecting 2 network hubs?

Right now I have 5 computers on my network, which is the maximum that my hub can take, and I was thinking of putting an extra network card in my XP machine so I can set up a network bridgeIf I hooked the second network card up to the other hub, would I be able to use both hubs to form one big network? thanx.

Answer:

Um, with 5 computers the collision domain doesn't matterWith 10 it still really doesn't matterYes, if you are running XP Pro, you can add a second NIC connected to a hub that is NOT an extension of the collision domain, but could be either bridged (same subnet) or routed (different subnet) - your choiceThe above task is such a headache with no real purpose that I'd just do the below, unless you are trying to learn networking - then do it(You need the routing and remote access service installed and configured.) If it were my home networkI'd buy or make a crossover cable and chain the two hubs together(Or you may have a button or x-over port that could be used with a regular cable to chain the two hubs together.) Knowing more about what apps you use more than 5 PC's for would be somewhat helpful, but unless you are looking to be a crazy performance god, you'll be fine chaining another hub:) Another point to the above post, a hub does not expand the _capacity_ of a collision domain, it expands the collision domainA switch however, will expand the capacity of a subnet be segmenting the collision domainsWhen switches were first invented, you would chain hubs off of the switch ports to expand the capacity of the subnet while reducing the size of the collision domain(Switches used to be really, really expensive, although some still are:) ) I'm sorry King, your post just got my goat for some reasonThere is no switch that you will be willing to pay for that will actually switch at wire speedThose tend to run about $100 per port for the cheapest onesSo your five port hub - if it grew up to be a 5 port wire speed switch would cost about $500.
