Question:

Copper discs in with coins?

I just recently came across a bag full of older times. In the bag it has small think copper-colored discs. The discs are dirty, almost black excedt where they were touching something or stuck together, then they're almost untouched. Could these just be little things mixed in or is copper supposed to be a preventative?

Answer:

Well, copper is highly resistant to corrosion (won't rust). In a moist environment, it will change from its normal reddish orange into more of a reddish brown. However, copper protects itself fairly quickly with a green film (patina) that immediately halts any further corrosion that may occur (again, over a long period of time). It's very good t protecting itself. Whenever you see an old statue, or an old bell, or... the Statue of Liberty... they're green-ish because you're seeing that protective patina (this also happens with bronze). Not only is it protective, but it's often valued as something that makes your statue (whatever) more attractive, which is why there are a variety of chemicals out there that you can rub onto your clean copper to quickly create the attractive patina. I realize that I'm off track, but for hundreds of years, before artificial chemicals were mixed together, sculptors/etc. had their own natural accelerate... human urine. It has a high ammonia content, which accelerates the process (sorry, don't know the exact chemical reaction). So getting back to your strange little things. If they're black like that, they're probably not copper, because copper just doesn't take on that look through any process that I'm aware of. I'm also not sure as to how things would have semi-randomly gotten stuck together. I've never hear heard of copper as a preventative. Just sculpture-type jobs, and very famously the military vessels in the Age of Sail, where their bottoms would be copper-clad for higher speeds than pure wood -- also, easier to clean off the barnacles and other crud than off of pure wood. Hope this helps. Not sure it has...
final time i made a study on Phil cash. the BSP attempts to make the significance of each and every coin identical to its quantity. so they are attempting to make a a million peso coin rate a million peso provided that melted through junk retail outlets. which means a ten peso coin will have to rate round (or not up to) 10 pesos! the rationale for that is that in the event that they make cash out of gold, a few individuals will simply soften it and switch it to some thing extra priceless/pricey
