Question:

Copper(I) Chloride Salt - Need help?

I'm trying to figure out ways to make Copper(I) Chloride salt. I have already used nitric acid to disolve copper turnings, then added water, HCl and then more copper to set off REDOX rxn. I can't seems to find the experimental procidure to make this salt (different from what I have done). Is there any other ways you can make Copper(I) Chloride? add KCl instead of HCl? If so, can you tell me simple procidure for it, or refrence to it.Thank you

Answer:

Copper metal cannot react with acid as Cu+ ion cannot displace H+ ion of the acid. I suggest two ways to prepare copper(I) chloride:- - Mix copper(I) oxide with hydrochloric acid. Product formed is copper(I) chloride and water. Cu2O + 2HCl ---> 2CuCl + H2O - Mix copper(I) carbonate with hydrochloric acid. Product formed is copper(I) chloride, carbon dioxide and water. Cu2CO3 + 2HCl ---> 2CuCl + CO2 + H2O
